Red Cedar Festival, 2010 Master Class Information


Flute: 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. in the Choir Room

BulletKate Prouty has played flute and piccolo in orchestras and ensembles in the Midwest, south and mid-Atlantic regions, and has taught flute and piccolo lessons for over 20 years.  Her students have performed in recitals, concerts and festivals, have won scholarships and auditions, and have gone on to be professional musicians, teachers and scholars.  Ms. Prouty has worked with adult musicians in private lessons, small classes and larger flute choirs to great success.  She enjoys starting adult beginners as well as returning flutists, and thinks that enjoyment and fun are vital ingredients to the learning experience. Kate has a Master's of Music from the University of North Texas, a Bachelor's of Arts in Music from Western Illinois University, as well as performance certificates from Canada and France.  She teaches flute lessons and flute choirs at MSU's Community Music School and at Lansing Community College and performs with a variety of chamber groups on flute, piccolo, Celtic harp and early flute.

 

Oboe: 11:15 – 12:15 in the Choir Room

  1. BulletChris Wheeler graduated from the California Institute of Arts in 2008, studying oboe with Allan Vogel and earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He has also studied with Stephen West at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama in Glasgow, and has had additional studies with Gretchen Morse, Nancy Ambrose King, and Stuart Horn. A native of Webberville, Michigan, Chris has been surrounded by music of all types for as long as he can remember. He started his musical journey at the age of 5, taking piano lessons, and in 6th grade, a funny instrument called the oboe entered the picture. Chris is a freelance performer in the greater Lansing area, performing with the Mason Orchestral Society and Meridian Community Band, as well as teaching privately and performing solo recitals.

 

Bassoon: 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. in the Choir Room

  1. BulletDavid Wm. Fitts is a graduate of Michigan State University where he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, and has done graduate work in Music Education.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Phoenix where he graduated with honors. While at MSU he studied Bassoon with Edgar Kirk and was active in numerous Chamber Groups. He is active as a private bassoon teacher in the Lansing and Flint areas, and has been active as a performer throughout Mid Michigan.  He has served as the Assistant Conductor and Principal Bassoon of the Lansing Concert Band, performed with the Lansing Symphony, was Principal Bassoon of the Shiawassee County Chamber Orchestra, and the East Lansing Trinity Orchestra and Choir.  He maintains a busy schedule of Adjudicating for the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and is active as a freelance band clinician.

 

Clarinet: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. in the Choir Room

BulletSara Stolt is currently pursuing her D.M.A. in clarinet performance, studying with Dr. Caroline Hartig at Michigan State University.  In addition to receiving a graduate assistantship, she is the recipient of the prestigious Rasmussen Fellowship at Michigan State University and the Bill Morris Scholarship in clarinet. Miss Stolt received her Master of Music degree from Michigan State University in 2008 and her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Houston in 2006 where she was a scholarship student of Professor Randall Griffin. Currently, Sara is the section leader of the Michigan State Wind Symphony and co-principal of the Michigan State Symphony Orchestra. Sara has been invited to study and perform for clarinet master classes in the summer of 2010 at the Centro di Studi Carlo della Giacoma in Todi, Italy, sponsored by MSU Study Abroad and the College of Music. In addition to her extensive performing activities, Sara is a clarinet faculty member of the Michigan State University Community Music School.
