The Casco Community Band was established in 1928, by Mr. Hendricks, who
sold instruments for Grinnell Music. We take the name Casco from our
township, which is in the south west corner of Allegan County. Band
members range in age from 15 to 75 years old. They come from the
surrounding areas of South Haven, Bangor, Holland, Glenn and in
between. They begin practicing on Monday nights in early April in
preparation for the first concert and program at the end of May. The
Memorial Day Program honors veterans, has several band numbers, and a
special speaker. Everyone joins for a covered dish (potluck) dinner at
Casco United Methodist Church, northeast of South Haven, on 66th
Street, off 109th Avenue. Practices continue and the band plays an
average of 15 concerts before the final "Pop" Concert in late
September, again at the Casco United Methodist Church. The Casco
Community Band has between 17 and 32 members who enjoy playing varied
music for nursing homes, ice cream socials, homecoming events, and
local parades in South Haven.
Richard Barden, former percussionist with the band, has been its
conductor for the past four years.
