Genesee Valley Concert Band
Flint, Michigan

Bruce Nieuwehuis, conductor

The Genesee Valley Concert Band was formed in 1996 by area musicians who wanted to play some summer concerts in the parks. Since most community band organizations have seasons that do not extend into the summer months, and since summer band concerts are a tradition in American life, a new group, with the summer programs as its main focus, was discussed and formed. Its first season was the summer of 1996. During the last five years they have played in the Clio Amphitheater, Lapeer Court House Lawn, Linden's Music By The Mill, Swartz Creek Amphitheater, Flint's Mott Park, Fenton, Flint’s Summer in the Parks at For-Mar, and Frankenmuth’s Independence Village.

Most of the 36 or so band members play in other groups during the rest of the year.

Programs by the GVCB include marches, Broadway tunes, well known barn burners, novelty numbers, patriotic pieces, and other songs from a wide variety of sources.

The conductor, Bruce Nieuwenhuis, is a retired band director from Swartz Creek High School. His other conducting experiences include eleven musicals with the Clio Cast and Crew, two years conducting the University of Michigan-Flint summer band, one year conducting the Flint Concert Band, three years as conductor of Christmas At Whiting, and he is currently the conductor of the Genesee Wind Symphony.
