Southwestern Michigan College
Community Brass Band
Dr. Jonathan Korzun, conductor
Dowagiac, Michigan
The Southwestern Michigan College Community Brass Band was founded in January of 1992 by its current director, Dr. Jonathan Korzun, Director of Bands at SMC. It is composed of community members (both amateur and professional musicians), SMC students and talented area high school students. It is a British-style ensemble, modeled after the brass bands so popular throughout Europe. An official member of the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA), it is one of the newer bands in a fast growing number of brass bands in the United States and Canada.
This year, the SMC Community Brass Band has commissioned a new work by the composer Steven Bulla honoring the 30th anniversary of the first graduating class at SMC with the composer conducting. Mr. Bulla is also composing works for the SMC Symphonic band and Jazz Ensemble as part of this commemoration.
