Tulip City Brass
Holland, Michigan
The Tulip City Brass was formed in Holland in October of 1996 and performed its first concert the following December. Since then, the Ensemble has performed at festivals, church services, park concerts, retirement centers, shopping malls, and special events for community clubs and organizations. This includes appearances last summer on programs with the Holland American Legion Band, the St. Joseph Municipal Band, and the Otsego-Plainwell Community Band; as well as performing with the Zeeland Community Band in early autumn. Rehearsals are held weekly in Holland. The current personnel includes four original members of the sextet. All members perform regularly with other organizations, creating associations that reach thirteen different community bands and ensembles.
The Tulip City Brass perform a wide variety of music ranging from the baroque and classical to the contemporary and popular. A significant portion of the music is drawn from the concert band repertoire. In general, much of the music is transcriptions or arrangements of pieces not originally intended for brass sextet. Many times even when there is a brass version available, it is in a quintet setting and needs to be reworked to add the sixth part. A number of the pieces have been arranged specifically for the Ensembles performance, and several of them are publiushed through Tapp Music Sales of Newton, Iowa.
