West Michigan Concert Winds
Muskegon, Michigan

Gail A. Brechting, conductor

The West Michigan Concert WINDS was founded in the fall of 1979 as a volunteer organization, dedicated to performing quality instrumental music in the community. In 1986, the band, formerly known as the Muskegon Symphonic Band, formed an affiliation with Muskegon Community College. Students and members of the community have the opportunity to participate in the band for college credit, or just for recreation.

The band draws its members from much of the West Michigan area. While many members are current or former music educators, most are not, representing a wide variety of vocations and interests. The WINDS rehearse once a week at MCC in order to develop their specific talents, prepare for performances, and share their love of music. Three or four concerts are offered at various auditoriums during the regular school year. The summer series presents a variety of outdoor venues.

The band has had the honor of performing at Grand Haven's Fourth of July Celebration, Muskegon's Summer Celebration, the Montague Fine Arts Summer Series, Muskegon McGraft Park Band Shell, the Hackley and Hume Historic Site, and Muskegon Community College and Baker College's Graduation Ceremonies. In the summer of 1996 they participated in the Bournemouth Music Festival during a tour of England and Wales. The WINDS also toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland in July, 1999. They hosted the Omuta City Band from Japan (Muskegon's Sister City) over the past Labor Day weekend and plan a reciprocal visit to Omuta in 2003.
