The Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band was founded in January 1992
by its current director, Dr. Jonathan Korzun, Director of Bands at SMC. One of three
bands at SMC, it is composed of community members (both amateur and professional
musicians), SMC students, and talented area high school students. It is a British-style
ensemble, modeled after the brass bands so popular throughout Europe, and is an official
member of the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA).
The band's list of guest artists include Ed Shaughnessy, Clark Terry, and Danny Barber.
Guest conductors have included Richard J. Suddendorf, Robert Spradling, and Allen
Mitchell. Last year, the three SMC bands each commissioned new works by composer Stephen
Bulla as part of a commemoration held on April 3, 1998. The SMC Community Brass Band
premiered his piece with the composer conducting.
