Grand Sousa Concert

Friday, October 29, 2010 ~ 7:30 PM
East Lansing High School, East Lansing

The tradition of the Grand Sousa Concert as the annual concert season opener for the Meridian Community Band began in the autumn of 1994. Conductor Carolyn Sherrill wanted to showcase the style and content of a turn-of-the-century concert presented by America's most famous bandleader, John Philip Sousa. Both the audience and musicians alike have met the use of soloists and authentic period pieces with enthusiasm.

Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands

Saturday, March 5, 2011 ~ 9:00am - 6:00pm
The Annual Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands is a one day event that brings together adult community bands from across the state of Michigan and Ontario. The event is hosted by the Meridian Community Band at Okemos High School, Okemos, Michigan.

Education is the emphasis of the Festival. Four nationally recognized clinicians critically evaluate each band's forty-minute public concert. Following the performance each band will receive a thirty-minute educational clinic with one of the clinicians. Musicians and conductors alike agree that this has been a very useful tool for improving musicianship and performance techniques.

Instrumental master classes, taught by university-level specialists, are offered as a supplement to the ensemble clinic. Band networking and workshops are in the planning stages.

Conceptual development of the Red Cedar Festival of Community Bands was done jointly by Carolyn J. Sherrill, Robert Copeland, and Dana B. Swanson.
